Jaunpils district was always prominent in Zemgale and Kurzeme because of its labor and cultural traditions which were associated with Jaunpils castle that was built in 1301, according to the chronicle written by Saaremaa bishop J.G.Arnolt. In order to study, aggregate and popularize the historical information of the district Jaunpils museum was opened in 1995, and currently it is located in the oldest living part of the castle. The activities of the museum include three directions:
1.Studying and popularization of Jaunpils district’s history.
2.Aggregation of the historical material related to fon der Reke family, Jaunpils former owners.
3.Studying the activities of Livonian order in Kurzeme and Zemgale.
In 2003 Jaunpils museum received accreditation certificate. In the exhibition hall it is possible to look at the Livonian castle models - Jaunpils castle and Dobele castle, copies of arms and armour, archaeological finds, collections of ancient coins, exciting and interesting information about the castle and destinies of Jaunpils people. The secret medieval stairs lead to the exhibition hall where one can regularly see masterpieces by the professional and local artists, attend Jaunpils gardeners’ flower exhibitions. Visitors love such activities as “Art Days”, “Museum Night”, medieval festivals.
